The film was released in several countries on December 16 before being screened in North America. According to a leading filmmaker, Rentrak, the firm’s revenues are expected to exceed $1 billion dollars at the end of the week at the latest, after 12 days for the movie market.

Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm has proved to be one of the smartest acquisitions in US companies.

The deal, valued at $4.05 billion in cash and shares, was announced on October 30, 2012, marking the beginning of a new era in the Star Wars franchise. Disney will make this investment and more in a few short years. Disney’s four-star movies have generated more than $5.3 billion at the box office, according to ComScore.

‘This was one of the smartest acquisitions in history,’ said Paul Dagarabian, chief analyst at ComScore, CNBC.

Although the total box office is a powerful measure of the success of the film, it still does not tell the whole story. There are hundreds of millions of dollars of costs coming into force, along with dozens of other revenue streams from ‘Star Wars’.

A number of companies in the film market expect that the seventh part of the Star Wars films may reach more than $11 billion.
